EDGE-ing In

The finalization of EDGE was done by the 3GPP in 2000. EDGE is also called Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution. This is the natural upgrade following the GSM services. Network operators naturally wanted to shift from GSM to EDGE or rather upgrade from GSM to the latter because of the enhanced quality of performance that EDGE offers. This is a rather high performance technology. Also it is much more cost effective than what GSM is. Also, since there is a higher quality and higher speed of data transfer, therefore people who use EDGE use and consume over thrice the amount of data that people who use GPRS or GSM.

What is the magic market combination for EDGE? This is because the concept uses technology that is very efficient and cost-effective. Secondly, it is very easy to upgrade from GSM or GPRS to EDGE. Also, EDGE can be compatible in a lot of services and networks that already use GSM and WCDMA. All these act as the unique selling points of the technology which is popularly known as EDGE. Most of the GSM networks which are a little advanced use or rather support EDGE and therefore is very easily accessible. And the best thing is that EDGE is also used in terminals which are a little backward as well.

There has been a steady improvement in the EDGE performance ever since it first came into existence a few years back. The current features which EDGE offers, are really good and efficient. EDGE gives you bit-rates of 250 kilobytes per second. This speed is broadband level. Also, the end to end latency is less than 150 ms. Such good facilities obviously makes it a really viable option for any user who is looking for good connectivity. It complements the networks of WCDMA and HSPCA and also LTE networks. This is a really good option for all the networks which provide mobile networks.

EDGE really provides a wonderful range of internet connectivity in all situations. This obviously includes both indoor and outdoor coverage. EDGE really knows how to use the radio spectrum and that too, efficiently. This is done to maximize the quality of mobile Internet services. There is a lot of complicated coding and transmission of data. All these is done to achieve the higher bit rates and bandwidth. Thus a higher bit rate is transmitted through each radio channel. There are a lot of sophisticated methods that are used in the development of the EDGE technology. EDGE has various explanations which include Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. It is also known by yet another name and that is, Enhanced GPRS or EGPRS. It is also called IMT Single Carrier, or IMT-SC for short.
