Future of 3G

What exactly is 3G, anyway? Well, in a nutshell, it’s the third generation of technologies and standards for mobile phones, which enables the telecommunications providers to give users a wide range of advanced services, like video calls and wireless data transmission. All this was not possible for 2G. 3G has created a new set of standards in terms of a wide range of services, and there have been dramatic advanced in mobile services. Now it is possible to download and transfer movies, music, or any other media, while on the move, from one device to another.

What lies in the future of 3G? In this article, we shall tell you, firstly, there is the end-to-end connection-testing application of Agilent Technologies, for 3G wireless networks, which enables equipment manufacturers and also carriers to verify the interoperability between multi-vendor network elements which are required for the delivery of advanced 3G wireless services, for instance high-speed mobile Internet access. This test software not only analyses the exchange of control-plane messages between each network element, but also verifies the end-to-end connection, and permits the users to isolate any specific areas where the connection seems to have failed. This means that the problems would be resolved easily and quickly.

The future looks good. Large-scale 3G mobile systems have met with good commercial success, and they are now the key point of survival for many of Europe’s mobile operators in the next five years o so. It has been estimated that at least 100 billion dollars that they spend on licenses alone, must have an additional 120 billion dollars to 200 billion dollars for the spending on infrastructure. However, you mustn’t think that 3G is just about more bandwidth and fancier applications; operators want to know, when buying the 3G infrastructure, what their business case is, and how much it would help them. They need to know they’ll get compelling service. To have a truly wonderful future, 3G needs not just the support of venture capital firms and their networks, but also the support of the network vendors.

3G has definitely changed our world around – there’s no denying that. For instance, now the public wants everything from postage-stamp-sized, user-friendly multimedia terminals with high-resolution streaming video-teleconferencing and video postcards, and even swanky new applications, which are all going to change our lives. Today, operators, too, are demanding complete end-to-end systems with bundled, turnkey applications.

So are there any precautions we should take, when it comes to the future of 3G? One prudent thing to do would be to get as many applications as possible, and run them as quickly as possible. This is why the operators have been quite busy recently, building locally-driven services and forging regional business alliances. But of course, there is the prohibitive cost that must be considered. What is needed for 3G in the future is diverse technology, to converge, and do so quickly. For a greater success, 3G needs seismic advances in network, power, display, and size-factor technology, and of course other personalization elements.
