Disadvantages and Discussion of Wi-Fi

When it comes to Wi-Fi, there are certain disadvantages. For instance, the spectrum assignments and operational limitations are quite inconsistent, if you consider the whole world. Also, the consumption of power is quite high, compared to other standards – this makes the battery life and also the heat generated a concern to some users. Another main disadvantage is that Wi-Fi makes use of the unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum; this also has other devices like microwave ovens, video sender devices, Bluetooth, cordless phones and video sender devices – which may cause faulty performance. There is also the fact the Wi-Fi networks may have a limited range, for instance a typical Wi-Fi home router might have a range of 45m (150 ft) indoors and 90m (300ft) outdoors. Plus, since Wi-Fi falls prey to the physics of radio wave propagation with frequency band, there may be a variation in the range.

Another main disadvantage of Wi-Fi is that the most common wireless encryption standard, the wired equivalent privacy or WEP has been shown to be breakable; even there has been correct configuration. There could also be an intervention of a closed or encrypted access point with other open access points on the same, or a nearby channel – this can prevent access to the open access points by others in the area. This makes using Wi-Fi a problem in high-density areas like large apartment buildings, where many people are using Wi-Fi access points.

We shall tell you about another disadvantage of Wi-Fi – there are inter-operability issues between brands or deviations, which can cause limited connection or even lower output speeds. And lastly, there is always a chance that free access points could be used by malicious people to initiate an anonymous attack – and it would be difficult to trace this person beyond the owner of the access point itself.

Now the question is – why and where should you use Wi-Fi? Well, in a nutshell, the installation is very quick and comfortable; no wonder that people are replacing their old wired LANs with Wi-Fi. This means that you can move your machine around the place without losing your Internet connection or any other network resources. So you can sit virtually anywhere – home, library, coffee shop, and airport – and check your mail and do stuff on the Internet. In fact, some places like schools, coffee bars, and airports offer a constant Internet connection with wireless LAN – so you can always stay connected at such places.

However, the most important disadvantage of Wi-Fi is the range – sometimes there may be difficulties in making a connection with a received that is more than 50-75 meters away. So this means that the signal should be stronger, in order to provide a larger connectable space. Plus, some wireless adapters work on frequencies that many other wireless dveices use – this might cause interference, so the connection performance would probably be quite poor. However, all said and done, Wi-Fi has done wonders, and we all need it in our lives, to always stay connected, wherever, wherever.
